Small Skiers
It wouldn't be the cabin without some skiing. Ben led the way for all the other kids on some borrowed "magic" learning skis.
Not to be outdone by her older brother, Eliza followed next, making it look pretty easy.
Then Abby was up. "Don't lose your confidence!!"
As ever, dad was a patient teacher, waiting with the kids in the water and helping them achieve a vertical position. I remember when he used to put our skis on us in the boat and carefully lift us over the edge. I wonder how many people he's taught to ski over the years.
Ben celebrates his triumph.
Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of some of the best skiing moments, like when little Nate (4) skied in a crouch position, or when Ben yelled 'hit it' and pulled MaryAnn right off the Sea Doo, or really when any adult skied. Sea Doo skiing isn't really condusive to photography like a boat is. Still, for being 14 years old and only having 65 horsepower, the Sea Doo was remarkably adept at pulling up anyone who wanted to ski. Maybe it just illustrates one of the Selkirk Lodge's maxims: you don't need technology if you have technique. It made me wonder if the Sea Doo's power was equal to that of the boats dad was learning on when he was a teenager. Maybe that's why he uses his right foot as a rudder.

The Cabin
A rural road, right outside of Wilbur, Washington, so familiar to me I can drive it blindfolded, leads to a ramshackle cabin, circa 1969, where some of my best memories were formed.
Like the dirt road I learned to drive on when I was about 13. I can still hear my dad's voice instructing me to find the smoothest grooves, avoid the shoulder, shift into second for the steep hills, and for heaven's sake, take off the parking break (oops).
With five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a loft, the cabin is rumored to actually de-value the lot which it sits on. Joining our family in 1989, the cabin hosted two annual family reunions every year wtih forty people or more and multiple outings with friends or immediate family. It feels more like home than anywhere else.

Good Traveler
There was a lot of flying on this vacation, and Ella was almost always a perfect traveler. She even helped out with the bags at the airport.
Ironically, the worst flight was the shortest, a 90 minute flight from Salt Lake to Spokane. Ella screamed uncontrollably for 87 of those minutes. It seemed much longer than the flight from Moscow to Los Angeles.
